If I were to ask someone to choose between having a roof over their head or living homeless on the street, I know exactly what answers I would get. I would hear from almost all of us that we want to live. Because it is a matter that benefits us humans. And actually, not just us humans—as is well known, other living creatures also prefer to “live,” even if only in a burrow, a hole in a tree or a rock, and the like.
However, what was said about animals is not enough for us humans. That is clear. In some “hole” or other similar place, where one can perhaps only appreciate a little privacy and minimal protection from the elements, live only those we call the homeless. Because for people, that is truly not a home.
Those of us who have to find a place to live because we can’t stay with our parents forever, but who are also in a dire financial situation, naturally look for a sublet or a rental apartment. Although it’s overpriced, it’s still the most accessible form of housing. You end up paying more than the actual cost of this housing because the landlord wants a cut, but since rent is usually paid monthly, it’s easier to manage financially than if you had to come up with enough money to buy your own property.
Those who want to buy their own home can do so as well. In the long run, it’s more advantageous than paying rent somewhere, and it also guarantees unlimited tenure, but at the same time, it’s difficult because it’s not easy to scrape together as much money as is needed. But actually, you don’t have to save up for very long or very hard here either. You can also take out a mortgage if you qualify for one. And many people do just that—to own their own apartment or house. And believe it or not, mortgages are now available not only for private housing but also for cooperative housing. So the decision here depends solely on supply and demand.
So take your pick and find a housing solution that works for you. After all, living on the street isn’t a good option.
